A Living Double-Edge Sword

These days, competition in all genres of life is fierce, and it has become increasingly necessary to supplement one skill with another equally impressive one. Actors who are models, singers who are actors, etcetera. A perfect example of a young man who is blessed with a double talent is artist and DJ Mr. Christopher Delgado.

Delgado is 21 and a native Californian. He grew up all around the Golden State in Irvine, Huntington Beach, Los Gatos, and Gilroy. (A majority of his inhabitance centered around NorCal, which is why he is so cool....sorry....I am chronically biased towards NorCal and the Bay Area).

Chris is currently working to go back to school at The Art Institute of California - San Francisco as an Audio Production Major. In the field of music, Delgado, or known by his DJ name, DJ MYRE, has been producing for about two years, and DJing for about 3 years. When he DJs, he usually spins House, Eclectro, Tech House and Dubstep. But as far as his personal music, he draws his inspiration from anything tribal, "like bongos and congas, worldly string instruments and tribal language and chants", and tries to incorporate those elements into his music.

Aside, from music, Delgado is also a wonderful artiist. His graffiti style tags were the first thing that caught my eye. Chris has been drawing since before he could walk, and has told me that the inspiration behind his art is anything inter sting and dark, which he finds "very bold and powerful." Besides these wonderful pics, he also has been designing custom motorcycles unprofessionally since 2003. So if any of you are looking for a nice new custom Kawasaki Ninja perhaps, call up DJ Myre aka Chris Delgado.

As an artist, Chris's goal is to become well known for his work and music and "to give someone an emotional outlet, wether that be happiness, self comfort, anger, well being," or anything that music has done for him.

Stay tuned for Christopher Delgado's upcoming record label: T.I.T.T.S. (Take It To The Streets), focusing on records based out of San Francisco and Ireland.

Vanilla Bake Shop

If one were to look up the definition of CUPCAKE in the New Oxford dictionary, it would say "a small cake baked in a cup-shaped container and iced". Wow....beyond lame. Such an amazingly wonderful creation as the Cupcake, which should also be deisgnated as the World's 8th wonder, should have a much more sparkely beefed up definition than a little cake in a cup. But, one thing I will say about that stupid dictionary's opinion on Cupcakes is that they at least have no anytonyms for CUPCAKE, so at least they understand that there is no alternate or similar option that could liveup to the legednary king of desserts.

The only cure for such a fascination with Cupcakes is to have some for lunch. Which is just the thing me and my friends Heather and Sabina did this weekend. We took the BigBlue Bus down Wilshire to Vanilla Bakery to indugle in so heavenly adorable Cupcakes in place of your typical afternoon meal.

For some reason L.A. decided to be freakishly cold and windy that day, but that did not stop us from walking up the block to enjoy our cupcakes on an a bench overlooking Santa Monica Pier. Although we may have been frozen, we were very happy.

COMING SOON: Professor Glasses of the Week

Yes, I love Professor glasses. Perhaps its the instant intelligence one gains while wearing a pair of faux bifocals, or maybe its the innocent fact that you are jealous of the hipster next to you wearing the awesome frames because he actually can't see so you are choosing to mimic his state of blindness in the voluntary wearing of glasses that are in fact hipster not prescription. (woo, gotta love those run on sentences.)

Long sentence short, I am assigning myself a challenge.

The Goal: find one pair of professor glasses per week worthy of a photo and post on PinkGold.

The catch: they have to be people that I encounter, no internet or magazine photos.

The exception: they can be real glasses, although hipster are preferred.

Soooo ladies and gents, stay tuned, and get excited.

Cleary Clark

Some people have a lucky shirt or hat, I am proud to say that I have pair of lucky professor glasses; hipster, not prescription. It was while wearing these glasses that I was fortunate enough to meet the talented Mr. Cleary Clark. Clark is a second year grad student at USC's film school and aspiring muscician. Today I was lucky enough (yes...my professor glasses were with me in my bag for luck), to be able to co-interview Cleary Clark with the fantastic UCLA Radio DJ Jack Sills.

Clark is influenced by Jimi Hendrix and the music his father played for him as a kid. Since my thing is fashion I had to ask Clark to try and describe his style in one word: "classic". And I would definitely agree based upon the wonderful maroon grand-pa cardigan he had on. I am the cardigan's number one fan. Along with straight leg/skinny jeans, which the wonderful Jack Sills was wearing. I am a firm believer that one's preferred genre of music is translated into their style and clothing choice, an opinion that both gentlemen agree with.

Clark said that he wishes for his music to be therapeutic for his listeners, so if you want some therapy or more grand-pa cardigans make sure you get your bums over to his free show 10PM Monday night @ Cafe Ground Zero, over by USC Campus.

Valentine's Day. A day of chocolates, flowers, pink and red, love (hate for others) and overall really cute stuff. I for one have been struck by cupids arrow. And the first thing I gazed upon in my love struck state happened to be the one and only, Mini Cupcake Maker. So today me and my wonderful machine made some deliciously adorable treats in honor of Valentine's Day.

I will be a San Franciscan (born and raised) until the day I die, and it could easily be the coolest thing I ever claim to my name. Los Angeles is crazy wonderful too, but I am naturally bias towards the bay, and this picture definitely seals the deal in SF superiority (for the moment...).

Since I can't be there in my lovely city to witness all the amazing style quirks of its elegant in habitants, my mom sent me this picture of this fashion blogger's shoes. He was found outside of Pete's Coffee (or something), sippin' on a latte, working on his blog, and being overall amazing.

Moonshadows, Malibu CA

Last Sunday was my Birthday. And as much as I looooove birthday’s and super celebrating with atomic parties, I was really looking forward to celebrating a quite day with my wonderful family and gorgeous roommates. We all piled into the car, and headed down Wilshire Blvd.

I had some idea that we would end up near a beach, but we had driven past Santa Monica and Venice, and those two beach areas are the extent of my current beach-knowledge. So there we are, cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway, and I started to notice that the houses look like the ones on the beach in the opening of Two and a Half Men. We were driving through Malibu.

It was an awesome drive. Great music, (I was playing my newly acquired album, Brother, by the Black Keys while wearing my matching hipster sunglasses) and great scenery. I was especially pleased to see the coolest American Apparel location ever:

Then on my left, I see a glorious sign in blue that reads “Moonshadows", and immediately know that must be where we are going. We park the car, and my mom pulls up along side our white rental in her little blue Aspire with a bouquet of birthday balloons in the back. The parking area for consisted of a white-picket fence like railing that functioned as the sole barrier between the cars and the rock engulfed winter shore line. Despite the cold and the fact that I was slowly coming down with hypothermia in my vintage gold sequined cutoff shorts, I wanted to go for a swim. But apparently I was the only one at that moment.

Fortunately it was raining that day (I say fortunate instead of unfortunate because it always rains on my birthday), and the only semi-unfortunate part was that the Blue Lounge was closed. The lounge is outside, and has this super cool cabana-tiki-hut vibe, and on the weekends they have live music. But the rain killed that. But I was ok with that because, as I mentioned earlier, I had on my hypothermia inducing vintage sequin cut-offs.

Long story short: The food was amazingggg.

The atmosphere is out of this world (pun intended), and all of the nuanced and petite reminders that you are at a stellar beach side dinning heaven called Moonshadows is elegantly executed.

And the service was stupendous. We had the most amazing waiter. I am convinced that he made the birthday party insanely more memorable. So if you go to Moonshadows (and your crazy if you do not), ask for the waiter who wear a Star Wars tie.

Andddd, though this has nothing to do with Moonshadows, shout out to Vanilla Bakery for making the most amazinggggg vanilla cake with dark chocolate butter cream and light pink polka dots. And shout out to mom for the awesome attention to detail and her uncanny ability to mix and match with elegance and flair in her pairing of pink polka dotted cake (the polka dots are along the side of the cake, but I assure you they are there and they are wonderful) with various colored striped candles.

Feed A Model

As usual, I was surfing the web (surfer sur internet, as they say in France), with my daily massive cup of coffee and fashion on the brain. The night before, I was at a Q and A event with local Los Angeles designer Yotam Solomon. He brought with him two of his wonderful eco-friendly creations as well as a whole crew of people from other facets of the fashion industry. One of the lovely men he brought with him was Felix Salzman, Editor-In-Chief of LookBook LA. So this morning as I was browsing the wonderful LookBook LA, which I encourage you all to do, I came across the insanely awesome Feedamodel.com.

Los Angeles is the go-to city where people come to make their dreams come true. It is within such a wonderfully eccentric, glamours and grungy city where one can find some of the most original and fresh ideas out there. In a city full of ferocious standards and competition, you are going to need an arsenal of qualities and talents to offer that set you apart in this sea of dreamers. The girls of Feed a Model do just that. With the lethal combo of beauty, brains, artistry and a passion for life, these young woman have created a fantastically unique platform for their modeling careers and their art, all the while staying true to creativity and recognizing the essentials of giving back (15% of net proceeds from their awesome art work are donated to the ASPCA, Operation Smile and Artist Helping Children).

Apple Price, the owner and founder of Feed a Model, hails from Texas and is a model and an artist whose main inspiration comes from 80’s and 90’s pop culture. Originally founded by Michelle Easter, Izzi Stalder and Jami Rosner, Feed a Model has grown to include more than 30 girls in Los Angeles. Among these lovely ladies are a group that runs and sets up new ventures and events for Feed a Model. All are beautiful aspiring models, artistic, joyful and intelligent women. Like Tyra Banks said, “A smart model makes a good model.”

The genesis of Feed a model was formed in the spirit of creativity on a night the girls usually reserved for going to the clubs that was replaced with art, painting and photography. With inspiration at its core, Feed a Model’s goal is to “inspire your ‘inner creative’” while continuing to live a “creative charitable and positive life style”.

With Feed a model, Price’s goal is to continue to grow and motivate other girls along the way. I had the great privilege and honor to ask the wonderful Apple Price what advice she would give other young girls out in LA trying to be successful in the world of fashion and art, of which so so eloquently responded, “Keep a positive attitude, try not to let small set backs get you down, and of course if you are in LA come check out the event Feb 10th and meet us, if you like what you see, check out an art night with feed a model and get support from upcoming, newly into, or already successful girls with similar interests. Its great to have people around that are on the same page and supportive. Lastly I would say, its so much about your attitude and connections. Never burn bridges, always walk away leaving a strong impression, you will be remembered, so aim to be the hottest, genuine, and most optimistic "You" that you can be, at all times.”

The wonderful women of Feed a Model are hungry. Literally and figuratively. They have a creative hunger that they satisfy through their amazing and unique art, as well as an actual physical hunger, because every one knows how expensive LA can be. I am personally a big fan of COLOR. Some people don't like that I take that like to the full extreme sometimes with neon green tights or yellow shoes, but hey, you only live once so go colorful or go home. (Sorry, that was a really lame attempt at rephrasing "go big or go home".)

Anyway, being the kool kid I am, I happened to notice something wonderfully colorful in my English 10A class. We are currently reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, so my Professor put up a slide of King Arthur's Court, and I happened to notice the Court Joker juggling in the corner. But more importantly, I noticed his two tone tights.

Cupcakin'

Regardless of the fact that the term "cupcakin'" has absolutely no relevance to this post, I choose it as the title for the simple fact that it celebrates the word "cupcake", and that happens to be the main topic for discussion today.

I am probably one of the biggest fans of all things cupcake, so by default I am an enormous fan of the blog: AllThingsCupake.com

As my daily blog rolls have proven to result in wonderful discoveries, I had continued success this morning in coming across the outrageously fabulous phenomenon of GRAFFITI CUPCAKES. First of all, I loooove graffiti, and second I loooooooooooove cupcakes. So naturally I am insanely enamoured with this magical combo of the two.

The Black Ivy

One of my favorite blogs is Street Etiquette, owned by Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumb. These two fantastic and young Black men display immense amounts of style and knowledge about fashion, and they back it all up with amazing photos, videos, and eloquently written how-to's. (see their recent post on layering for men).

My favorite thing to come from Street Etiquette as of late, (or that I happened to recently stumble upon), was their video on Vimeo, The Black Ivy. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a must watch if you would like to see a glimpse into a wonderfully fashioned world full of clean cuts, perfect layers, and style with a purpose.

It is time to say goodbye to Santa Clause and hello to the wonderfully sparkly prospects of the New Year. Rather than come up with a list of New Years resolutions, I decided to ditch the verbal approach and go with some visual inspiration. Specifically in the form of photos of my two favorites in the world of music and style that have gracefully and deservedly taken their place on the wall of my room: Nicki Minaj and Adam Lambert.

Yes, their clothing choices are the definition of outlandish, and at times questionably styled. But it is their confidence in their choice of outfits and their sense of self that make them so wonderful as artist, beings of fashion, and people in general.

Thursday, November 18 me and some of my gorgeous friends went to the BCBGeneration event, A BCBGeneration Evening at Cafe Hammer.

Following the grand opening of the new BCBGeneration in Century City, the lovely ladies behind BCBG UCLA hosted an evening of fashion, beyond adorable gift bags, art and complimentary Wolfgang Puck Catering.

I got into the holiday spirit by pulling out my plaid flannel dress from H&M, and was ecstatic to get a chance to wear my new grey thigh-high knit socks from American Apparel.

The gift bags were super cuteee, and before I tore into mine, it was wrapped in raspberry pink cellophane.

I was beyond happy to sit in these pink chairs in between my frequent trips to the Wolfgang Puck catered snack table. My favorite from the catering: the slightly baked pita chips and humus. Delish.

Profeta in Westwood

The only thing in this world I love more than coffee, is cute urban hipsters. It would have been weird for me to take a lurky picture of all the adorable ones that work at Profeta, the espresso place in Westwood, so the closest I got was some cute pics of the outdoor patio, and my lovely friend Snook, as she enjoyed her wonderfully crafted hot chocolate. (that was a run on sentence, but I'm in a run on sentence mood, so it stays).

Seattle's Street Style Blog

These daily morning blog roll epiphanies are becoming quite a regular thing. Last time, it was the discovery of the reemergence of 70's style jeans. Today, the fashion scene that I never knew existed in Seattle Washington.

For some reason I wouldn't have thought of Washington as a fashion forward state. Probably due to the simple fact that it is not California or New York. But that is just me being bias (although Cali usually takes the cake on everything, sorry).

Soooo this morning, as I was checkin on my fav style blogs, I came across the amazing and fantastic Le 21eme Arrondissement.

Man on the Moon ll: The Legend of Mr. Rager

I. Love. Kid. Cudi. Therefore I love his album, Man on the Moon. Continuing with this thought process, I almost screamed (while in the library) when I saw something pop up on twitter and the only words that registered from this tweet were: Kid Cudi Leak.

Yes, thats right ladies and gentleman (and urban hipsters), Man on the Moon ll: The legend of Mr. Rager, has been leaked.

Native Foods

Native Foods, in Westwood, Los Angeles has to be the most amazing vegan food, if not just amazing food in general. I LOVE tofu, and more than tofu I love a good peanut sauce. And this sauce ladies and gentleman is beyond fantastic. I ordered (two nights in a row, mind you) the Hollywood bowl, which has steamed greens, tofu spears, an organic brown rice covered in a spicy peanut sauce. Chef Tanya, you are my hero. Keep saving those trees and making vegan gluten free deliciousness.

Sweet Seventies

The other morning I was sitting at my fantastic pink and orange themed desk, sipping coffee from my questionably gigantic orange mug, and doing my daily style blog run-through. Next up: Vogue Daily. To my delight, there was an article featuring 70's style jeans.

As cool as an entire article on vintage denim would be, the jeans feature are from the new denim line Mother, by Kim Kaeding and Lela Tilem. With nine different fits, these guys are rooting for jeans to make their comeback, and are making it highly possible by providing fabulous vintage washes, cuts and feels.

Seeing Kaeding's and Tilem's shared appreciation for the 70's and the re-birth of 70's style jeans has confirmed my love for the style of that time period. Here are a few of my favorite 70's fashion moments:

Larry Yust, "Photographic Elevations"

Today I took a whimsical trip to the Fowler Museum at UCLA to see Larry Yust's "Photographic Elevations", a collection of panoramic photographs of L.A., Paris, and Berlin.

The photos focus on street art and graffiti, things that people may view as acts of vandalism and last ditch efforts to decorate dilapidated buildings. But Yust, and myself, appreciate the social cultural relevance that graffiti has, especially the colors.

They "Cut Like A Buffalo", The Dead Weather

My favorite thing about the band, The Dead Weather besides their heavy electric guitar, and static vocals is their style, reminiscent of the 70's, but also 2010 in its own ambiguous way. Akin to their music, these musicians dress in a luscious grungy-glam rock way.

Every time I hear one of their songs, preferably "Cut Like a Buffalo" and "60 Feet Tall", I think of ox blood red nail polish, dark faux fur jackets, leather, leopard print, destroyed jeans and a disheveled mange with bangs.

My Hero: Kyleigh Kuhn. This fabulous young woman is from San Francisco, and a passionate advocate for the education of young women through the building of schools in Afghanistan. Her non-profit foundation, Roots of Peace, is not only funded by public donations, but also donations from her own model salary. Yes, she is a model, for Click Models in New York. Yeah, she does kind of rock. A lot.
